Her alarm woke her up with a chorus of annoying beeps. She jumped, then reached over, throwing it across the room with impressive force.
The sound of something smaller hitting the ground made her shift over, looking down at the ground groggily. A match lay on the wood, small and lonely on the huge expanse of the floor.
Remembering, she picked it up.
“Anyone you touch with this match will fall in love with you.” The creature, whose name was apparently Lucifer, explained.
“Oh yeah?” She was intrigued.
“It lights a fire in their soul that cannot be extinguished.”
“We’ll see about that.” She reached out to take it.
“No!” He hissed, shaking his head. “You can’t let this fall into the wrong hands. Anyone who touches you with it will invoke the curse on you! It works both ways.”
“Oh.” She was shaken, though she didn’t show it. “Okay, I got it. Can I have it now?”
He dropped it into her hand, and she closed her fingers round it with a smile.
“Be careful.” He warned.
“You’re telling me to be careful? That’s ironic.”
He took her free hand, held it for a moment, and then dropped it.
“I’ll be seeing you, Ember.”
She’d watched as he walked away.
Now, she stood in front of her mirror. Her bare face wasn’t something she looked at very often. There were freckles scattered over her nose, her cheeks, and a scar on the left side of her forehead from when she’d fallen over as a child.
She hated the vulnerability that she felt when she didn’t wear her mask. But today, that didn’t matter. Today, her face paints would stay in her drawer. Unused.
For the first time in three years, she was showing her face to the world.
