Caged

The noise of the bars makes me jump as my back thuds against them.

I look around, my chest constricts.

I’m in a cage.

A really small one.

People surround it, their arms reaching through the narrow gaps, trying to grab me.

Their voices become one, my vision blurs. Tears slip from my eyes, one after another.

Fingers pull on my hair.

I close my eyes and scream.

Everything goes white…

My eyes fly open. I sit bolt upright, my heart racing.

My breathing slows as my room comes into focus.

I go downstairs, sticking my arms out, embracing the quiet, the freedom.

The door closes behind me. I stand barefoot on the grass, staring up into the endless sky.

I’m in a cage.
